H.E. Ms. Ho Naun Returns from the 4th International Parliamentarians Conference in Ethiopia
The Cambodian parliamentary delegation headed by H.E. Ms. Ho Naun, the National Assembly’s chairwoman of the Commission on Public Health, Social Welfares, Veterans, Youth Rehabilitation, Works, Vocational Training and Women’s Affairs arrived home after attending the 4th International Parliamentarians Conference on Population and Development from 25 to 29 October 2009 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
H.E. Ho Naun said that this 4th conference was organized by the Forum of African and Arab Parliamentarians on Population and Development and the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA) commemorated the 15th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) which first took place in Cairo in 1994. She added that more than 400 parliamentarians, ministers of state and government officials and partners from civil society groups from 115 countries attended the conference.
In her speech, she stated that Cambodia has put great efforts to reduce HIV/AIDS prevalence, adopted the law on abortion, the law on the prevention of HIV/AIDS, the law on the prevention of domestic violence and the protection of victims and the law on the prevention of human trafficking and has committed to achieving its 5-year-prioritized plan which includes close cooperation between all stakeholders and the Royal Government concerning women’s health, promotion of law enforcement and the creation of Equity Foundations for Communes/Sangkats and ensuring of the availability of professional mid-wives in all health centers.
She added that the conference urged parliamentarians to play an important role in addressing problems relating to women and children in order to obtain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015 which include:
- advocating each government to increase national budget for public health;
- enforcement of laws and policies for the protection of women and children in respect of Convention on Discrimination Against Women (CDAW);
- raising the awareness of the public especially women in remote areas regarding social problems;
- oversight of law enforcement and making survey on people’s challenges and
- incorporating the spirit of the 1994 Cairo conference (ICPD) into each country’s national laws.
